VACATION TIME

As I mentioned in my blog earlier today, the temperatures in Toronto this weekend are seasonally warm. Click here to see my playout for this weekend on my earlier blog today.

Also mentioned, I'm headed up on vacation to Cottage Country (predicting nice weather) next week. I will be back Monday, August 6th, 2007. Just in time for August-like weather.

Until then, meterologist from CityNews, Micheal Kuss, will be blogging on his blog-CityNews Weather. He tells us how the weekend will also play out for us. He'll update his blog this week, so check his this week, since I won't be here!

As always, keep emailing me, and I'll return them when I get back...but until then, you will only get a "vacation response" from me.

Stay tuned for my blog back on August 6th. Have a great week!!

STORMS WON'T WASH OUT WEEKEND & VACATION TIME

TORONTO:

If you're planning to start up the BBQ or headed up North, the weekend's not looking too bad.

Friday as you know, we're going to see some of that precipitation (rain) with highs of 25C. Friday night is dipping to a low of only 18C, so if the rain is going to clear up, it's a great night for a walk. I'm not predicting the rain to end up until 9:00 pm, so pack the umbrella.

Saturday you can forget the umbrella, but may want to bring a light jacket. With temperatures hovering around the 26C mark, it will be mostly cloudy all day. Overnight lows of 18C.

Sunday is looking great. Sunny skies have been changed to partly cloudy, but only partially. With highs of 27C, it's going to be great. I'm predicting overnight lows of around 19C.

If you wish to see the Ontario forecast for tomorrow, click here.

If you wish to see the Canadian forecast for tomorrow, click here.

I'm headed on vacation next week (Monday, July 30 - Friday, August 3), so I won't be blogging. I going on a much needed and relaxing vacation up North to a trailer park--camping! The weather is looking nice up there too!

Have a great week! Wishing you all some great weather.

If you have a weather question, please email me and I'll get back to you when I get back.

AIR QUALITY INDEX (AQI's)

What are Air Quality Index''s or AQI's?

It is another weather measurment... it is a way to measure the amount of the six major pollutants in the air. These pollutants are particulates, sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), lead (Pb), and ozone (O3). A measurement of 0 to 100 is considered acceptable, but from 100 to 150 is unhealthy for old people, young children, and people with asthma. Above 150 is unhealthy for everyone.

Generally on hot, humid and sticky days, AQI's rise up. There are generally five classifications for an AQI.

If the AQI is 1-15, it is classified as "Very Good"
If it is 16-31, it is "Good".
From 32-49, it is "Moderate"
50-99 is "Poor"
100+ is "Very Poor".

Is the AQI also the Air Quality Health Index? Well in a word, no. For information on the AQHI, see one of my previous blogs, click HERE.

AQI's for Canadian provinces/territories and their cities, click HERE to retrieve them.

ENVIRONMENT CANADA & SKY TRACKERS

Last night, I was bored at my weather work (no action), so I decided to browse Environment Canada's website. I haven't really taken an indepth look at the site, so I did yesterday.

To my eyes, I saw something so interesting and I just had to share it with my blog friends.

There are two things that caught my eye, and they work for parents, kids and educators. Firstly, click HERE to activate the main site where these things can be found and radar and satellite imagery as well.

Skywatchers is a program where schools install a program (I believe the cost for the entire program is $250.00 CDN, but don't quote me) and students can track and record data, later submitting it to Environment Canada. This program and more information can be activated by clicking here. This is a great program for teachers and educators who want to teach their students about the weather. It is mostly used in schools. You will also receive programs and resources (weather instruments) to record the data. To register your school, click here. You can also view other student's observations here. Once you enroll in Skywatchers, you can also enroll in Club Sky, which is a contest. Click here for information.

Severe Weather Watchers is also a great program. Click here for more information. This link will give you tips and registration information. Basically, SWW is a program that you can look out for Severe Weather and report it to Environment Canada.

Want the daily weather trivia? Click here (courtesy of Environment Canada). This is updated every day.

Before leaving, I leave you with a couple of links that I find interesting on Environement Canada's website: www.ec.gc.ca .

Have a great day...weather's looking great in TORONTO.

If you have a weather question, email me at city.weather@yahoo.ca

EMAILS AND MUCH MORE & LINKING IT UP!

First-as promised, your emails.

Q: Where is CityWeather's main station located?

A: Toronto

Q: I read CityWeather's blog everyday. Most interesting. But is there a way that we can request another city?

A: Of course, just email city.weather@yahoo.ca and request the city you wish to read about.

Q: Where did you grow up and why are you so interested in weather?

A: Toronto, Ontario is my hometown. I love the weather...it is a huge part of life. You see, I love nature, parks and conservations and weather is a huge part. Health and nature are also my specialties.

You can continue to send those emails to city.weather@yahoo.ca

Secondly-the meeting. On Monday we had a meeting in regards to the blogs. Those two blogs "CityHealth" and the "JUMP and WAVE..." will soon be removed. We are actually planning to start a site. A site with various blogs and information. So you'll want to stay tuned with that. Details soon in regards to the site. If you have a request for a blog, please email me at city.weather@yahoo.ca with BLOG IDEAS in the subject line.

Also, we want you to get involved too! Later this week I'll have details on a meeting that YOU can participate it.

And calendars marked because August 15 is another Weather Data Day.

Also, we are UPDATING the blog!!! Follow the blog footsteps of construction and improvement. Go to www.cw-dc.blogspot.com and check it often for more ideas.

Lastly, this week. None of my blogs yet are on weather this week, so here we go.

TORONTO:

The week is looking, well...alright....

Today, Wednesday and Thursday is partly cloudy with highs of 26C, 27C, 29C. Friday has some rain called for with a high of 29C. Friday is going to really be humid with the rain and heat.

Also I hear the term heat wave getting tossed around when it gets a little warm. There is a heat wave criteria. There must be at least three straight days where the temperature reaches 32C to qualify as a heat wave.

If you have a weather question email me at city.weather@yahoo.ca

Also, if you have a weather link send it to city.weather@yahoo.ca so I can put it on my "Link it Up" blog.

Late Night and Still Working...

I would like to thank you for all the emails I've been getting. I PROMISE that those questions will be answered BEFORE Friday.

It's Monday night at 11:51 pm and I just got back from my Weather Data work. This was a l o n g day!!

So most of you are wondering what is a Weather Data Day?

A Weather Data Day is when I (Weather specialist) head out of the weather tracking room, off my computer and head out. I go anywhere my boss(es) send me. Whether it'd be to a day at the park, an outdoor sporting event or all the way to Florida, I need to track the weather every hour.

It's not that easy.

Today I went to the Toronto Blue Jays game at the Rogers Centre. (Beautiful game---Jays win!!) Every hour I need to take the temperature, wind speed, barometric pressure, humidex, hunidity and conditions. Then I compare. I got into the studio around 10:30 and since then I've been inputting the data onto the computer. Tomorrow I need to spend the day devoted to MY PERSONAL predictions and input those too.

It may seem like fun (and the game WAS), but the work isn't. Especially when they close the dome and I need to head out every hour ON THE DOT to check it.

It takes about 17-27 minutes to do so--accurate eh!

So yes, I am still working. I haven't inputted the data onto the computer yet...it takes about 2-3 hours to do just that. Hopefully I'm headed out by 2 am (if not, 3 or 4).

ALL THIS happens on data day.

Mark Your Calendar: I'm headed out on ANOTHER data day (don't know where yet) on August 15, 2007. Another late night I'm preparing for. I don't know if I can be able to write a blog that day. It just so happens that my boss decided to give me a break...WOW! Possibly another week later after that too, I don't know yet.

Breaks almost over...

TOMORROW ON THE BLOG:
Expect these tomorrow:

  • Meeting we had today...just before I left at 10:00 am to the data system we had a meeting at 8:00...I had to be in the office early @ 7AM!!! Don't feel bad!! ANYWAYS... I'll let you in on some tips from that meeting.
  • Notice 2 new blogs on the blog spot?? Well I tell you more about those and if they will stay or not.
  • YOU can participate in a meeting. I'll tell you how.
  • A "heat wave" fact from a personality.

All this and more tomorrow. I don't even get the day off tomorrow...lucily though I don't have to be in until 12 pm.

Usually my hours are from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm. Long days...tomorrow though its only from 12-6pm.

Comments and questions answered soon.

Chris

CityWeather Has an All New "Look and Feel" -- Let Me Introduce you to things you DIDN'T know...

CityNews Weather has changed its outline.

Firstly, the colour. As you have noticed the colours are now Blue and White (it's our theme), with the odd black text there too.

Also, we now only have one post per page, but don't panic. You can still see all of our other entries.

How? Look at the left. It says "Blog Archive". ALL of my (our) previous entries are there...all of them!! So take a look, at all of them!!

Just find the title that you are looking for (or that most interests you).

Now, scroll down. Where the comment sections is (it usually says "0 comments"). Under there it says "Post a Comment". Click on that and post a comment...or as always, you can email me at city.weather@yahoo.ca and I'll respond.

At the bottom of that it says "Links to This Post". Over there you will find all the links I mentioned in my blog entry above AND possibly more too...you know, just the interesting ones!

That should be all! If I'm missing something or you need clarification or just to talk...email me city.weather@yahoo.ca. I'm anxiously waiting for the Email Blog.

Also, now you may want to get back to my WeatherWeb blog that I posted this morning.

here's the link:
http://city-weather.blogspot.com/2007/07/weatherweb-eheads-weather-activities.html

WeatherWeb: Ehead's Weather Activities

P.S.: Whenever you see "WeatherWeb" as the title of the blog, this blog links youu to a website.

Yes, kids love to forecast the weather (I think), but adult's do too...no? I was browsing around the web looking for WeatherWeb links and I found this one. It lets you forecast and announce the weather. It's a really fun and interesting activity (based in the US), and anyone around the world can have a blast!

So try it!!

Have a blast! Please let me know your comments about the game. Send them to city.weather@yahoo.ca .

ENVIRONMENT CANADA'S AIR QUALITY HEALTH INDEX

Environment Canada has a new system to keep safe from those exceeding Air Quality Index (AQI's) -- it's the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI), provided by Environment Canada. Not many know about this system.

Provided by Environment Canada's AQHI Page, here are some facts:

What is the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI)?
The Air Quality Health Index or "AQHI" is a scale designed to help you understand what the air quality around you means to your health.
It is a health protection tool that is designed to help you make decisions to protect your health by limiting short-term exposure to air pollution and adjusting your activity levels during increased levels of air pollution. It also provides advice on how you can improve the quality of the air you breathe.
This index pays particular attention to people who are sensitive to air pollution and provides them with advice on how to protect their health during air quality levels associated with low, moderate, high and very high health risks.
The AQHI communicates four primary things;
A number from 1 and 10+ indicating the quality of the air. The higher the number, the greater the health risk associated with the air quality. When the amount of air pollution is very high, the number will be reported as 10+.
A category that describes the level of health risk associated with the index reading (e.g. Low, Moderate, High, or Very High Health Risk).
Health messages customized to each category for both the general population and the ‘at risk’ population.
Current hourly AQHI readings and maximum forecasted values for today, tonight and tomorrow.
The AQHI is designed to give you this information in one place along with some suggestions on how you might adjust your activity levels depending on your individual health risk from air pollution.
Follow this guide on how to use the AQHI or learn about the history of the AQHI.

Don't we already have an Air Quality Index (AQI)?
While the Air Quality Index (AQI) has been reported for many years, this new Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) has been created with a different goal - to report on the health risks that are posed by different levels of a mixture of air pollutants.
Read more about how the AQHI and the AQI differ.

How is the AQHI calculated?
The AQHI is calculated based on the relative risks of a combination of common air pollutants which are known to harm human health. These pollutants include:
Ozone (O3) at ground level,
Particulate Matter (PM2.5/PM10) and
Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2).

What is the scale for the new AQHI?

The AQHI is measured on a scale ranging from 1-10+. The AQHI index values are also grouped into health risk categories as shown below. These categories help you to easily and quickly identify your level of risk.
1-3 Low health risk
4-6 Moderate health risk
7-10 High health risk
10 + Very high health risk
More information on the scale and the AQHI categories.

How can I find out about the air quality in my community?
If you live in the city of Toronto pilot area, visit Toronto AQHI for your local AQHI or Toronto Public Health's Web site at www.toronto.ca/health/aqhi.
Additional pilot locations will be established across Canada in the months to come. Visit our
pilot locations Web page to find out about locations near you.
If you reside outside the AQHI Toronto pilot, please contact your local public health office, Ministry of Environment air monitoring branch, or local lung association chapter for available local resources on air quality.

(courtesy of Environment Canada)

Now, in Toronto, let's take a look at the AQHI:

CURRENT: 3 - Low Risk

Monday Night: 6 - Moderate Risk

Tuesday: 7 - High Risk!

Who is at risk?

People with heart and lung conditions are most affected by air pollution. To find out if you are at risk, consult www.cas-aqhi.gc.ca, your physician, or Toronto Public Health at www.toronto.ca/health/aqhi.

Did you know...?

Large, heavy vehicles like SUVs cause nearly twice as much pollution as small, subcompact cars.

That's all for today's AQHI. Remember, this only helps keep Toronto a healthier place to live.
